Bodywork / massage : Mental Health Benefits
Often in my work as a counsellor my clients report weeks, months or years of stress, anxiety, emotional pain. I often ask "where in your body do you feel it, where does it live ? "They often know exactly where the stress, physical pain and emotional pain is located. Stress creates tension. Tension exacerbates pain. Massage eases the tension
Historically, massage therapy has been thought of as a way to help relieve physical pain and tension, but it can also have a significant positive impact on mental health. Research has shown that massage can help reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress, and can improve overall well-being.
Often addictions are established as a (maladaptive) way of coping with stress or trauma. If you are withdrawing from a substance addiction massage therapy can be an exellent regular alternative to the substance as you detox and get your life back into balance. It will likely cost less than the substance as well.
If you are recovering from trauma a massage can be a way of experiencing safe, caring, human touch that we all need
One way massage helps mental health is by reducing levels of the stress hormone cortisol. When the body is under stress, cortisol levels increase, leading to feelings of anxiety and tension. Massage therapy can help lower cortisol levels, which in turn can reduce symptoms of anxiety and stress.
Massage can also stimulate the release of endorphins, which are natural painkillers and mood boosters. Endorphins help to reduce feelings of pain and increase feelings of pleasure and well-being. This can help reduce symptoms of depression and improve overall mood.
Another way massage can benefit mental health is through the power of touch. Touch has been shown to have a calming effect on the body and mind. When receiving a massage, the body releases oxytocin, a hormone that promotes feelings of trust and connection. This can help to reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation, and promote a sense of well-being and relaxation.
Finally, massage can help to improve sleep quality, which is critical for maintaining good mental health. Sleep plays a crucial role in regulating mood, and getting enough restful sleep is essential for managing symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Most massage therapists have a range of ways of working on a continuum from the very energetic to the very relaxing. Tell her / him what you are experiencng ask questions, relax and unwind. If the pressure or location is not quite right, let the therapist know.
